In london overnight, the 25 year old jamaican sprinted in to the history books as the only man to have successfully defended the olympic 100 and 200 metre finals.
Australia scored its sixth gold medal in london overnight in canoeing, with the four man kayak crew clinching a win ahead of the hungarians and the czechs.
It set the tone for the rest of the day;16 year old Brittany Broben picked up the silver medal for her 10 metre platform dives, and the women's water polo team claimed the bronze medal in their game against Hungary.

Tate smith:You hear the crowd yelling and everyone sort of digging in deep and it's always special, like winning olympic gold, it just proves to, you know, the australians back home how hard it is to win.Because, like because we've got a lot of silvers but to actually win olympics is a massive big deal and, you know, yeah we're stoked that we've won it.
Emma alberici:This time couldn't have been different.In the lead up to london they spent four months training in europe away from family.For tate smith that was particularly difficult given he's a newlywed.
His wife rachel smith understands the sacrifices they've both had to make.
Rachel smith:We string our money together, he hasn't worked for a long time, you know, he's put everything?Br>
Emma alberici:How hard has that been for the two of you?
Rachael smith:It is what it is.You know, this is the goal so you just do what you have to and so many people have helped us as well so my family and tate's family have been so supportive and all of our friends.He's going to get older and there won't be an opportunity to happen in the future so you have to do it now.
Emma alberici:The youngest member of australia's entire team in london knows about starting a career early.Brittany broben is just 16 and has already won an olympic medal silver in diving from the 10 metre platform.
Brittany broben:I definitely dreamt about it a lot, it's been ralph lauren italia outlet my dream since i was really little so to actually live it, it's just unbelievable.
Emma alberici:Brittany broben admits to having been so nervous she almost fell off the platform.She's only been diving for four years.She had been a gymnast but was forced to change disciplines after a foot injury.

Diving coach:Inside she's got a lot of determination.I've nicknamed her the brobenator i think and i think we'll have to watch at for rio especially, she'll be a really dominant force in four years as well and over the next few years.
Emma alberici:It was a proud moment too for australia's athens olympics platform gold medallist, chantelle newbery, who first spotted brittany broben and encouraged her to take up a career in diving.
